Predicting Cash Flow in the Construction Industry

von SilverDrift am 24.04.2026 10:01

Does anyone else feel like they're flying blind when it comes to cash flow forecasting? In our construction business, we have these massive outflows for materials and labor at the start of a phase, but the client payments are often delayed or tied to long-term milestones. I find it incredibly stressful to predict if we'll be "in the black" three months from now. My current reports are always "backward-looking"—they tell me what happened last month, but not what's coming. How are you guys handling predictive budgeting? Is there a specific way to get a better grip on future liquidity?

That "backward-looking" trap is exactly why so many construction companies struggle even when they have plenty of work. You need a forward-looking dashboard that accounts for retention sums, pending variations, and upcoming procurement. We had to rethink our entire approach to data. I actually found a lot of clarity in this article https://thearabianpost.com/conquering-complexity-how-a-specialized-erp-for-ksa-s-construction-industry-drives-growth-and-compliance/  It explains how digitizing the whole lifecycle of a project in a specialized KSA-centric system allows you to run "what-if" scenarios for your cash flow. It's not just about accounting; it's about having a real-time view of your project's health. Since we implemented a similar strategy, we've been able to negotiate better terms with suppliers because we actually know when we'll have the liquidity.

"What-if" scenarios are exactly what I need to stop second-guessing our bank balance every morning!
